BOERUM HILL — BROOKLYN FOR PEACE, a not-for-profit organization working for the abolition of nuclear weapons, commemorated on Monday the 79th anniversary of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki (Aug. 6 and 9, 1945), which resulted in the loss of more than 200,000 lives and left countless others suffering from sickness and displacement. BFP joined groups at the Japanese Consulate to deliver a letter apologizing to the people of Japan. “Although this annual vigil is on the streets of New York, it feels like the message reaches around the world as we join with Japanese and Japanese-American friends to call for nuclear abolition,” Ruth Benn, Brooklyn For Peace delegation member, said in a statement.

BFP commended Reps Jamaal Bowman, Yvette Clarke and Nydia Velazquez for supporting the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (H.Res.77) and called on Reps. Dan Goldman, Hakeem Jeffries and Nicole Malliotakis to join as co-sponsors.
