CITYWIDE — THE CITY DEPARTMENT of Sanitation is finalizing a $7 million contract with a Spanish garbage bin company to purchase new large trash containers as part of the second phase of a pilot program targeted at reducing sidewalk trash, reports Gothamist. The sleek new receptacles will be installed in parking spaces in West Harlem and will be assigned to individual apartment buildings, and emptied automatically by new mechanized garbage trucks. The program’s first phase, launched last year, saw communal bins placed streetside in West Harlem, in an effort to remove sidewalk trash piles. City Councilmember Shawn Abreu said that the pilot had significantly reduced rat-related complaints, while residents told Gothamist that the streets were cleaner — although some expressed reservations about the further loss of parking spots.

The contract includes an order of up to 1,500 bins and allows the city to spend up to $700,000 per year for the next ten years.
