MUMBAI — The impact of global events, as hope springs eternal: A student attends a peace rally to mark the anniversary of the World War II atomic bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in Mumbai, India, Tuesday, Aug. 6, 2024. In Japan, officials, who on Tuesday marked 79 years since the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, urged world leaders to stop relying on nuclear weapons as a deterrent and take immediate action towards their abolishment in order to remove the risk of atomic war amid conflicts in Ukraine and the Middle East and rising tensions in East Asia.

Japan and the United States also agreed to further bolster their military cooperation by upgrading the command and control of U.S. forces in the East Asian country in what is being called “extended deterrence.”

WALL STREET — Multiscreens are the enablers for tracking so much action: The monitor of specialist Anthony Matesic is seen through his glasses as he works on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, Wednesday, Aug. 7, 2024. Wall Street slumped after a morning rally evaporated, but the losses weren’t as bad as the manic moves that wracked markets worldwide over the last week. The Associated Press reported that the Standard & Poor’s 500 fell 0.8% Wednesday, the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell 0.6%, and the Nasdaq composite dropped 1%.

Driving the stocks lower was Nvidia, one of Wall Street’s most influential companies, which went from a morning gain to a loss of 5.1%, making it the heaviest weight on the S&P 500. Fueling the drop were fears that prices had skyrocketed too quickly in the midst of a frenzy surrounding artificial intelligence technology.
