George Santos, the former congressperson embroiled in a whirlwind of legal and political scandals, has made yet another dramatic move in an effort to secure what he insists will be a fair trial — Santos’ legal team has filed motions for a partially anonymous jury and a written juror questionnaire.

In a court filing, Santos’ attorneys argue that the relentless media circus surrounding their client’s case has been so prejudicial that only a partially anonymous jury can safeguard the jurors’ privacy and ensure impartiality.

“Given the extraordinary level of media attention surrounding Santos and the significant risks this publicity poses to juror safety, privacy and impartiality, these measures are necessary,” the memorandum reads.

Santos’ team also insists on a detailed written juror questionnaire to weed out those who might harbor biases from their extensive exposure to the media frenzy. The court needs to delve deep into potential jurors’ media consumption habits, political views and personal opinions on everything from campaign finance laws to the Israel-Palestine conflict.

The government, while conceding to the partially anonymous jury, objected to the written questionnaire.

The former congressperson’s legal woes began with a 23-count superseding indictment related to his 2022 congressional campaign and personal financial dealings, including wire fraud and identity theft. Since then, the negative media portrayal has been relentless, with Santos being branded a “liar” and “con artist” in headlines far and wide.

Santos, who has been expelled from Congress, continues to face scrutiny not just for his legal battles but for his colorful personal life. The media has scrutinized everything from his relationships to his alleged use of campaign funds for personal expenses like Botox.

If the court grants Santos’ motion, jurors would complete a comprehensive questionnaire designed to identify any potential biases or preconceived notions. This questionnaire would cover various topics, including their exposure to media coverage about the case, knowledge of the defendant and involved parties, and political affiliations. For instance, questions might probe jurors’ familiarity with Santos’ political views and their opinions on financial crimes and relevant legal concepts.

Granting these motions will change how the jury is selected by allowing the defense to gather more detailed information about potential jurors, enabling them to be more selective and strategic in choosing individuals who might be more favorable to their case.
