TAHITI — Reports from a far-flung suburb of Paris — where waves can be 20 feet high: Kauli Vaast, of France, surfs during the semifinal round of the surfing competition at the 2024 Summer Olympics, Monday, Aug. 5, 2024, in Teahupo’o, Tahiti. The exhibition chronicles the history and culture of surfing in the archipelagos of French Polynesia and its path to being introduced as an Olympic sport at the 2020 Tokyo Games.
