New robotics core laboratory fast-tracks timing on diagnostic test results
BOROUGH PARK — Maimonides Health has completed its new robotics core laboratory, enhancing the hospital’s ability to deliver advanced diagnostic services and provide patients with medical test results within 24 hours. The laboratory, now fully operational, is part of a major upgrade that brings receiving, accessioning, sample processing, pathology, cytology, histopathology, core laboratory and phlebotomy services under one roof. These technological updates will increase clinical testing volume and improve turnaround times, allowing the chemistry lab to process up to 300 tests per hour, or 7,200 tests in a 24-hour period. Total Laboratory Automation, an advanced system replacing repetitive manual tasks, utilizes robotic devices in preparing and transporting specimens to analyzers and archiving them into a refrigerated storage space attached to the line. Hospital staff will also benefit from the upgrades, which include a new staff lounge, an educational and training space for staff, students and residents, and dedicated areas for the development and validation of new equipment.
The renovations have been part of a multi-year capital plan to double the size of its adult Emergency Department, and to open new pediatrics and psychiatry emergency departments. Maimonides recently celebrated the one-year milestone of the Bay Ridge Emergency Department’s opening, filling a void from when the embattled Victory Hospital closed in 2007.
