PARIS — The ‘Grappling Gi’ is loose fitting and purposefully plays a role in the skillset: South Korea’s Kim Min-jong and France’s Teddy Riner compete during their men’s +100 kg final match in the team judo competition at Champ-de-Mars Arena, during the 2024 Summer Olympics, Friday, Aug. 2, 2024, in Paris, France. Riner on Friday became the second three-time individual Olympic gold medalist in judo history in one of the most electrifying events of the Paris Games, the Associated Press reported at 12:30 p.m. on Aug. 2. The 35-year-old heavyweight defeated Min-jong for the gold in his fifth Olympics. An 11-time world champion and four-time Olympic gold medalist, Riner is one of the most popular and beloved figures in any sport from France.
Teddy Riner was France’s flag-bearer during the opening ceremonies last week.

Richardson, who is already the reigning world champion in the event, has now made her long-awaited Olympic debut in track and field. In June, she became the fastest woman in the world with her 10.71-second sprint at the U.S. trials.

NANTERRE — Breathing is critical: Tunisia’s Jamila Boulakbech competes in a women’s 800-meter freestyle heat at the Summer Olympics in Nanterre, France, Friday, Aug. 2, 2024. Boulakbech qualified in the 8th position in the first heat but was eliminated after the second heat. Each swimming event is divided into rounds with the purpose of trimming the field of competitors (which can sometimes number upwards of 90+ for individual events) down to a final race of eight, explains the Paris 2024 Olympics page on swimming competitions. Technically, a heat can refer to any single race within a swimming event, regardless of round. All swimmers competing in a given event must swim in a preliminary heat to qualify for the next round of competition.
For events longer than 200m, such as the 800-meter race, the eight fastest swimmers from the preliminary heats automatically qualify for the final, where medals are at stake.

Ms. Kurmasheva, who holds joint U.S. and Russian citizenship, is an editor for the U.S. government-funded Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty. A Russian court convicted her on July 22 during a secret trial for spreading false information about the Russian army and sentenced her to 6½ years in prison. Her conviction was handed down on the same day as it did for fellow prisoner, Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who was also released as part of the prisoner-swap agreement.
However, the Associated Press reports that the deal required major concessions from European allies, including the release of a Russian assassin, in order to secure freedom for the group of journalists, suspected spies, political prisoners and others.

Germany banned neonicotinoids and glyphosate pesticides, which were proven harmful to bees. They also promoted bee raising and beekeeping throughout Germany, including at the Bundestag Courtyard.
Urban beekeeping, in particular, has seen a boom in recent years, with growing numbers of young city-dwellers installing hives on their balconies.

The elderly residents have experienced heart-rending and cruel hardships, including injuries and abandonment from family. The Associated Press’ David Goldman chronicled their stories through photography.
