City seeks comments on proposed ‘Sammy’s Law’ traffic slow zones
CITYWIDE — The city Department of Transportation is soliciting public comment on several sites across the five boroughs where speed limits are planned to be dropped to 20 or 10 miles per hour in the wake of “Sammy’s Law,” a traffic-calming measure that gives the city the authority to lower speed limits. The law, named after Brooklyn boy Sammy Cohen Eckstein, who was struck and killed by a van in 2012, was passed this spring. Several streets around Brooklyn are being considered for the 20 mph speed reductions, including sections of Prospect Park West, Seventh and Ninth avenues, Fort Greene Place and Lenox Road. Certain open streets, including sections of Willoughby and Underhill avenues and Berry and Sharon streets, are being considered for speed limits of 10 mph.
Community Board 2 constituents can comment online on the speed limit modifications for Fort Greene Place and Willoughby Avenue. Residents of other community districts can find more information and opportunities to comment on other affected streets through their community boards and on the city DoT’s website.
