CONEY ISLAND —  FOR THE FIRST time since 2015, a new champion claimed the crown at Nathan’s Fourth of July hot dog eating contest, reports the Associated Press. Patrick Bertoletti of Chicago, a competitive eater with two decades of experience, downed 58 dogs in ten minutes in a tight race. Bertoletti did not participate in the contest last year but was considered a favorite, having placed third in 2010. In the women’s division, longtime champion Miki Sudo won for the 10th time with 51 dogs, beating out second-place competitor and last year’s runner-up Mayoi Ebihara with 37 dogs and her fiance, Nicholas Wehry, who managed 46 dogs in the men’s contest.

The Nathan’s crown was considered up for grabs after the banning of legendary 16-time champion Joey Chestnut last month. Second-place winner Geoffrey Esper, also a favorite after taking second in 2023, managed 53 dogs this year.
