SANTIAGO — We need more baby rhinos! Silverio, a twelve-day-old white rhino, runs next to his mother, Hannah, during his presentation at the Buin Zoo in Santiago, Chile, Tuesday, July 2, 2024. The baby rhino becomes the third of this endangered species born at the Buin. In what is being hailed as “a big achievement” for conservationists worldwide, the male calf is the third white rhino to have been born in South America. He spent his first 12 days in medical confinement.

According to the organization Save the Rhino’s website, this sub-species of rhino, still classified as “Near Threatened,” has increased to 15,940, most of them in South Africa. The birth of a male rhino is particularly welcome.

KASHMIR — Summer fun around the world: Kashmiri boys jump into the Dal Lake during a hot summer day in Srinagar, Indian-controlled Kashmir, Tuesday, July 2, 2024. This urban freshwater lake is considered the most visited place in Srinagar, a popular spot for tourists and locals alike. However, Dal Lake is also within the disputed Jammu and Kashmir region. The conflict between the two nations dates back to the 1947 Partition of British India, which established a Muslim-majority Pakistan and a Hindu-majority India. Over the past eight decades, efforts have been made to reconcile the two regions, with the United States as a key diplomatic player.

However, the recent elections in India that gave Hindu-nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi another long term may further complicate relations between the two neighboring countries.

MOSCOW — Yellow dresses are made for summer cooling: A girl cools herself in a fountain at Manezhnaya Square near the Kremlin Wall in Moscow, Russia, Tuesday, July 2, 2024. Warm weather has settled in Moscow with a temperature of 32 Celsius (89,6 Fahrenheit) and will increase in the coming days. The fountain complex was built in the mid-1990s. The central fountain, named the Geyser, has a group of sculptures called The Seasons. The designers of the Neglinka River fountain complex created a channel with a mosaic bottom, bridges and various statues of fairy-tale creatures, including the Little Mermaid, the Firebird and the Frog Princess.

During the early 2000s, the complex was supplemented by the Waterfall fountain where the girl is pictured. Based on the physics feature of overflow, the Waterfall Fountain is an arranged “Cascade,” with bowls installed at different heights from which water overflows.
