COPENHAGEN — ‘Release the geese!’ Geese fly by as Denmark’s King Frederik X presents the King’s Watch during the Anniversary Parade at the Royal Life Guards at the Life Guard Barracks, in Copenhagen, on Thursday, June 27, 2024.

Earlier this year, King Frederik ascended the Danish throne, succeeding his mother, Queen Margrethe II, after she announced her abdication at the end of 2023. Now in her 80s, Queen Margrethe had undergone major back surgery; her health caused her to reconsider her ability to lead the Scandinavian nation in what is largely a ceremonial role.

King Frederik, 56, known as down-to-earth and informal, is fluent in three languages besides Danish. He is also an athlete and is impassioned about climate change and other environmental issues.
