GERMANY — Even fans have fans: Ukraine fans display a banner reading ‘Peace has a price’ and a portrait of Nazariy Hryntsevich, a fallen soldier and football fan, during a Group E match between Ukraine and Belgium at the Euro 2024 soccer tournament in Stuttgart, Germany, Wednesday, June 26, 2024. The war at home impacted the Ukrainian team’s performance, as Ukraine was eliminated in a 0-0 draw.

Nazariy Hryntsevich, fighting alongside his comrades, managed to hold the defense at Azovstal for three months before being taken prisoner by Russia. Returned to the Ukraine army after his release, Hryntsevich was ultimately killed in action at age 21, reportedly the youngest defender in the line.

IOWA — Nature’s revenge — two weeks ahead of the “Twister” sequel: A tornado is seen near Cedar Rapids, Iowa, on Tuesday, June 25, 2024. More severe weather was forecast to move into the region Tuesday, potentially bringing large hail, damaging winds and even a brief tornado or two in parts of western Iowa and eastern Nebraska, according to the National Weather Service. Towns in South Dakota were also devastated by tornadoes in North Sioux City, South Dakota, on Tuesday. The twisters flattened neighborhoods and disrupted utility services, including water and electricity.

The areas near the South Dakota/Iowa and South Dakota/Nebraska state lines have also seen massive flooding from the Big Sioux River.

SEOUL — Waterworks for classic summer fun: Gangsol elementary school students cool themselves off in a public fountain in Seoul, South Korea, Wednesday, June 26, 2024. South Korean Meteorological Administration forecasted temperatures at 30 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) in Seoul. Some schools in Korea are year-round, with a couple of months off in between semesters. Summer vacations are typically briefer in South Korea than in the United States; the students get about six weeks’ recess before returning in August. The South Korean school year runs about 288 days compared to 180 days in the U.S. Korean school days are often longer as well.

Schools also mandate that different uniforms be worn for the warmer and cooler semesters. However, on a hot day during wintertime, one must wear the winter uniform.

The U.S.A. is also in the tournament but assigned to Group C.

TEHRAN — Spirituality expressed on a spectrum: An Iranian woman without wearing her mandatory Islamic headscarf flashes a victory sign as two head-to-toe veiled women walk at the old main bazaar of Tehran, Iran, Thursday, June 13, 2024. Ironically, in the period leading up to the 1979 Islamic Revolution, it was middle-class, educated women who adopted and encouraged the use of the hijabs as a protest statement against being hyper-sexualized and westernization. They were ultimately surprised when the new regime mandated the wearing of hijab and modest dress.

While some Islamic nations require women to wear the full body (including facial) covering called a niqab, most do not. Young girls under the age of puberty are not required to wear a hijab, though many do.

KENYA — When protests end in pain, not peace: Edith Wanjiku, left, weeps after viewing the body of her son, who was allegedly shot by police during Tuesday’s protest at the Nairobi funeral home, Kenya Wednesday, June 26, 2024. Thousands of protesters stormed and burned a section of Kenya’s parliament Tuesday to protest tax proposals. Police responded with gunfire, and several protesters were killed. However, in an ironic reversal, Kenya’s president, William Ruto, announced late Wednesday that he will not sign the bill that he had earlier pushed in order to stabilize the nation’s economy. He said his decision was in response to the tragedy in which nearly two dozen protesters were killed and hundreds more wounded while vehemently opposing the tax increases.

Although Ruto came into power promising reforms to stabilize the economy, he has conceded that they have caused widespread pain and dissatisfaction.

ROME — Paint the town red one day, hose it down the next: Rome municipality workers clean the Spanish Steps after activists dumped red paint over them protesting violence against women, in Rome, Wednesday, June 26, 2024. The protesters were part of a group named “Bruciamo Tutto,’’ translated as ”Let’s Burn Everything.” They spilled paint down the 135-step monument, then dipped their hands in the paint, symbolizing spilled blood, and left handprints on the monument as tourists looked on.

Their protest asserts that 40 women have been slain since November 2023, many of them by domestic partners. Sparking the protest was the killing of 23-year-old Giulia Cecchettin. Also making the news was the slaying of another woman, who was pregnant at the time, during a home invasion earlier last year.

HAITI — The welcome committee stands at attention: Kenyan police stand at their base during a visit by Haitian Prime Minister Garry Conille in Port-au-Prince, Haiti, Wednesday, June 26, 2024. The first contingent of U.N.-backed foreign police arrived the previous day, nearly two years after the Caribbean country requested help to quell gang violence. The Kenyan troops’ and police arrival marks the fourth major intervention by U.N.-backed forces since Haiti asked for international assistance.

For security reasons, only high-ranking officials in Haiti know the precise assignment or deployment timetable.

BALTIMORE — The see-through uniforms can still get to third base: Baltimore Orioles’ Colton Cowser, right, is safe at third base in front of Cleveland Guardians third baseman Jose Ramirez, left, during the sixth inning of a baseball game, Tuesday, June 25, 2024, in Baltimore. That must have been a comfort compared to what happened two innings earlier. The Cleveland Guardians won 10-8 in a close game, scoring five runs against the Orioles in what the Baltimore Sun called an “ugly” fourth inning. However, the Orioles did manage to score two runs in the bottom of the fourth.

The Orioles, now at 49-30, have lost five straight games and hold onto their second-spot standings in the American League East. The Cleveland Guardians, with a 51-26 record, top the American League Central.
