NATIONWIDE — RIGHTING A HISTORIC WRONG, President Joe Biden on Wednesday issued a proclamation granting “a full, complete, and unconditional pardon” to LGBTQI+ persons convicted of offenses based on their “consensual, private conduct” with other adults. The military banned gay sex by consenting adults under Article 125 from the years 1951 to 2013, when the statute was changed. Many vets who served honorably were given dishonorable discharges, cutting them off from health and other benefits. “Despite their courage and great sacrifice, thousands of LGBTQI+ service members were forced out of the military because of their sexual orientation or gender identity,” Biden said in a release. “While my Administration has taken meaningful action to remedy these problems, the impact of that historical injustice remains.” He urged affected veterans to apply for an upgrade of discharge.

The military branches, in conjunction with the Department of Justice, will provide information about application procedures.
