Dr. Syra Madad named as NYC Health + Hospitals’ new Chief Biopreparedness Officer

CITYWIDE — NOTED EPIDEMIOLOGY TRAILBLAZER and pathogen expert Dr. Syra Madad has been appointed as NYC Health + Hospitals’ first Chief Biopreparedness Officer, the city’s public health system announced Tuesday. Dr. Madad will lead the special pathogens team in preparedness, mitigation, response and recovery efforts and oversee comprehensive policies to enhance the city’s readiness against biological threats, including infectious diseases. In addition to her role at NYC Health + Hospitals, Dr. Madad is core faculty at the National Emerging Special Pathogens Training and Education Center, affiliate faculty at the Center for Emerging Infectious Disease Policy & Research at Boston University, a fellow at the Harvard Kennedy School and an advisor to the National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity as well as the World Health Organization.

Dr. Madad has made substantial contributions to the field and has presented her work at more than 70 conferences, NYC Health + Hospitals said in a release.
