MARINE PARK — THE NYPD ON Saturday was still looking for two teenagers, ages 16 and 17, who were sucked away from the shore at Jacob Riis Park beach on Friday evening, reports Gothamist. Witnessed by a large crowd of beachgoers, the teens jumped into a large wave but appeared to struggle to stay above the water in what police said were currents so strong that rescue divers had to be pulled out. The NYPD, at a press conference, told reporters that the incident happened three minutes after 6 p.m. when city lifeguards go off duty. Queens Borough President Donovan Richards told Gothamist that lifeguard hours should be extended to 7 p.m. or later during heat waves.

NYPD spokesman Kaz Daughtry said the department believes the teens may have experienced a rip current but is still investigating the incident. The Coast Guard called off its search on Saturday night.
