SUNSET PARK — AN ELDERLY MAN injured in a rear-end auto collision on the Gowanus Parkway three months ago died of his injuries on Thursday, Jan. 20, police reported. On March 15, just after midnight, Athanasios Athanasiou, 77, of Farmingdale, Long Island, was driving westbound on the Gowanus Expressway near 79th Street when his 2000 Honda CRV was hit from behind by a 2024 Jeep Wrangler. Athanasiou’s auto subsequently smashed into the concrete barrier to the left, leaving him with injuries to the head and body. He was transported to NYU Langone Hospital-Brooklyn and later brought for treatment to Mount Sinai Hospital, where he died.

The operator of the Jeep Wrangler did not remain on the scene and fled the collision on foot to parts unknown. No arrests were made, and the investigation remains ongoing by the NYPD Highway District’s Collision Investigation Squad.
