BAY RIDGE — SENATOR CHUCK SCHUMER on Friday announced the awarding of $15 million in federal funding for design and engineering work on the proposed Interborough Express line between Brooklyn and Queens, reports the Daily News. The IBX would run along current freight tracks, linking neighborhoods including Bay Ridge, Midwood, Brownsville, Bushwick, Ridgewood and Woodside with 17 subway lines and the LIRR. Because the IBX uses existing infrastructure, its price tag is substantially lower than other MTA projects at an estimated $6 billion. Initial work was set to use money raised from congestion pricing tolls, but with that plan now shelved, the train’s construction could be delayed as the MTA reworks its budget to prioritize repairs.

Governor Hochul earlier this year touted the IBX as a transportation priority, awarding $52 million in state funding for planning purposes.
