BEDFORD-STUYVESANT — ST. JOHN THE BAPTIST CHURCH in Bedford-Stuyvesant, which recently completed extensive renovations, will receive a blessing during Mass this Sunday from Bishop Robert Brennan of the Diocese of Brooklyn. Bishop Brennan is scheduled to celebrate a bilingual English-Spanish Mass on June 23 at the church located at 333 Hart Street, during which he will bestow a blessing on the recently completed interior and exterior renovations to the church, which includes fixing the roof, painting and restoring religious statues. Founded in 1888, St. John the Baptist Church grew and expanded to several academic institutions to meet the diocese’s educational and community needs: St. John’s College Hall (later, St. John’s University, established in 1870), the Major Seminary of the Diocese of Brooklyn (1889), a grammar school (1903), and a high school (1927) were founded on parish grounds.

The 11 a.m. Mass is on the Sunday before the feast day of St. John the Baptist, which is observed each year on June 24.
