DOWNTOWN — THE NYC DEPARTMENT OF TRANSPORTATION (DOT) will present a project update for the city-owned section of the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway between Atlantic Avenue and Sands Street in Brooklyn Heights — the Triple Cantilever section, aka BQE Central —  at public workshops on Thursday, June 20 (in-person) and Monday, June 24 (virtual). “These workshops are another important step forward in undoing the historic harm the BQE has created across communities,” DOT Commissioner Rodriguez said in a release, adding the agency would continue to refine design concepts. The June 20 workshop will take place from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at City Tech Namm Cafeteria, 300 Jay St. in Downtown Brooklyn. The June 24 virtual event is online from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. (Register in advance at: https://bit.ly/4bJuEGF).

The city’s plans to rebuild the highway have been contentious from the start. In April, the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway Environmental Justice Coalition, composed of community groups and officials from across Brooklyn and Queens, demanded to be at the planning table for the massive project. At the podium: Brooklyn BP Antonio Reynoso, a member of BQE-EJC.
