CONEY ISLAND — LEGENDARY 16-TIME NATHAN’S Hot Dog Eating Competition winner Joey Chestnut has been barred from the contest after 19 years and will not be able to compete this July 4, reports the New York Post. Nathan’s and event organizer Major League Eating said in a press statement that the decision was made after Chestnut accepted a sponsorship from the vegan meat brand Impossible Foods, which recently launched a line of plant-based hot dogs. Chestnut wrote on X (Twitter) that he was “gutted” and that he had learned of the ban from the media. MLE stated that they were still open to negotiations that would allow Chestnut to return — although he would have to drop his endorsement deal with the “rival brand.”

Chestnut’s ouster echoes that of former Nathan’s champion and longtime Chestnut rival Takeru Kobayashi, who was barred from the Coney Island contest in 2010 after reportedly refusing to sign an exclusive contract with MLE. Kobayashi recently retired from competitive eating over health concerns.
