CONEY ISLAND — THE ANNUAL CONEY Island Mermaid Parade is returning to the beachfront next weekend in its 42nd year of celebrating the neighborhood’s entertainers and artists as well as its nautical roots. This year’s King Neptune and Queen Mermaid are painter Joe Coleman and longtime parade star Whitney Ward. The pair, wheeled in a 101-year-old wicker boardwalk chair, will lead the procession of elaborate floats, costumed revelers and other celebrants down Surf Avenue and along the boardwalk, then conduct a ceremony officially marking the start of the summer.

The parade kicks off at 1 p.m. on West 21st Street and Surf Avenue, while the beach ceremony will take place around 5 p.m. following the parade. More details and registration information for prospective merfolk can be found online on Coney Island USA’s website.
