DUMBO — HUNDREDS OF PUBLIC SCHOOL KIDS launched self-made boats from Brooklyn Bridge Park on Tuesday with the help of Brooklyn Boatworks, reports News 12. The 215 middle-schoolers began building the miniature sailboats out of plywood at the beginning of the year, and finally got to take their creations for a spin as part of New York’s Fleet Week celebrations. The Boatworks program instructs public school students in the use of tools and blueprints to construct boats, teaching leadership, construction and math skills through hands-on learning while introducing the students to potential careers in engineering.

The junior boat-builders got a big boost of confidence from seeing their crafts afloat: “You can actually do what you put your mind to,” one student told News 12. Classmate Julian Monica told PIX News, “What I feel like I created is the best thing. It’s so awesome.”
