PHILIPPINES — Checking out the impact of natural gas buildout: A man swims beside corals off of Verde Island, Batangas province, Philippines on Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2024. The Philippines is seeing one of the world’s biggest buildouts of natural gas infrastructure. But the buildout raises serious questions about the health of nearby coral reefs and fishing communities.

Prompting the buildout was the realization that the Philippines archipelago’s only gas reserve is estimated to run dry within four years, according to a Reuters article published in May 2023.

ROME — Squeezing over the bar: Nafissatou Thiam, of Belgium, makes an attempt in the high jump of the heptathlon at the European Athletics Championships in Rome, Friday, June 7, 2024. The women’s Heptathlon is a seven-event competition running for two days, with 100m hurdles, high jump, shot put and 200m, according to World Athletics. Day two comprises the long jump, javelin and 800m. The athlete who scores the most points wins that heptathlon.

Thiam, who turns 30 on Aug. 19, holds championships in the Olympic, World and European arenas. Her goal now is completing her first heptathlon since winning gold at the Munich 2022 European Athletics Championships.

NEW DELHI — Post-election procedures: Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi speaks to the media outside the Rashtrapati Bhavan after receiving a letter from the President of India, Draupadi Murmu, inviting him to form the next central government, in New Delhi, India, Friday, June 7, 2024. Even though Modi’s own Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) failed to win a majority on its own, the National Democratic Alliance, which won the most number of seats in the country’s national six-week election, elected him as coalition leader.

Modi is set to take the oath of office on Sunday, June 9.

BOSTON — ‘Already up here, just hangin’ on …’: Boston Celtics center Kristaps Porzingis dunks next to Dallas Mavericks center Dereck Lively II, foreground, during the first half of Game 1 of basketball’s NBA Finals on Thursday, June 6, 2024, in Boston. The New England team, which ranks at the top of the Eastern Conference with a 64-18 record, won that game 107-89.

The game also marked Porzingis’ return to the basketball court after 38 days, during which he underwent rehabilitation for a calf injury. The 7’2 native of Latvia in Northern Europe received a hero’s welcome.

PARIS — Massive symbol, hung on one even more massive: The Olympic rings are seen on the Eiffel Tower Friday, June 7, 2024, in Paris. The Paris Olympics organizers mounted the rings on the Eiffel Tower on Friday as the French capital marks 50 days until the start of the Summer Games. The 95-foot-long and 43-foot-high icon structure of five rings, made entirely of recycled French steel, will be displayed on the south side of the 135-year-old historic landmark in central Paris, overlooking the Seine River. This year’s Games of the XXXIII Olympiad are being held in the homeland of Pierre de Coubertin, the founder of the modern Olympic Games. He is credited with designing the five-ring emblem now attached to the Eiffel Tower. 

The five rings symbolize the five inhabited continents: the Americas (grouped together), Africa, Europe, Asia and Oceania, which comprises Australia and all the islands and archipelagos in the Pacific Ocean.

DETROIT — Extraordinary career spanning seven decades: Diana Ross performs during “Live From Detroit: The Concert at Michigan Central” on Thursday, June 6, 2024, in Detroit. The iconic singer, who looks much younger than her 80 years, launched her “Beautiful Love Performances – Legacy 2024 Tour” at the Michigan concert. The tour will take her to Colorado’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre later this month and to Denmark and the Netherlands in August before she returns stateside for more concerts.

Diana Ross has also just released her new album titled simply, “Thank You.”

It is a Hindutva-based, Marathi regionalist and nationalist political party formed in 2022 and named for the former leader of the Shiv Sena party. Uddhav Thackeray has been a member of Maharashtra Legislative Council since 2020, president of Maha Vikas Aghadi since 2019 and was also the leader (pramukh) of Shiv Sena from 2013 to 2022.

Thackeray’s surname originated in Great Britain from when India was a colony of the British Empire.

PARIS — An official bond, a different dress code: U.S. President Joe Biden shakes hands with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Paris, Friday, June 7, 2024. At this meeting, Biden officially apologized to the Ukrainian president for the United States’ months-long Congressional delay in securing military aid. The delay is being blamed for Ukraine’s falling behind in its ability to defend itself against Russian forces.

Zelenskyy, for his part, appealed for continued bipartisan U.S. support “like it was World War II,” he said.

BERLIN — Music as an international bond: American singer Billie Eilish hugs a fan in Berlin on Friday, June 7, 2024. The artist is on a promotional tour for her new album “Hit Me Hard and Soft.”

Los Angeles native Billie Eilish Pirate Baird O’Connell has already garnered several awards, among them nine Grammy Awards, two American Music Awards, two Guinness World Records, three MTV Video Music Awards, three Brit Awards, two Golden Globe Awards and two Academy Awards.

She is the second artist in the history of the Grammy Awards to win all four general field categories — Record of the Year, Album of the Year, Song of the Year, as well as Best New Artist — all in one year.
