BUSHWICK — THE DEATH OF A MAN following an encounter with the NYPD, in the overnight hours of Sunday, May 26, in Bushwick, has prompted an investigation from State Attorney General Letitia James. The Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigation deals with the case of Andre Joseph Mayfield, who was holding a knife as officers exited their marked patrol car around 2:20 a.m. on Sunday. The officers had responded to a previous and unrelated call. After the officers tasered Mr. Mayfield, he stood up and approached them, carrying the knife. The officers then shot at and struck him before recovering two knives at the scene. Mayfield was transported to an area hospital, where he was later pronounced dead. Pursuant to New York State Executive Law Section 70-b, OSI assesses every incident reported to it where a police officer or a peace officer, including a corrections officer, may have caused the death of a person by an act or omission.

The Office of Special Investigation notes that the facts presented are preliminary and are subject to change.
