JONES BEACH — JUST IN TIME for what is shaping up to be one of the hottest summers on record, Gov. Kathy Hochul announced Thursday that the state is investing $100 million from this year’s capital budget to revitalize and transform the abandoned Jones Beach East Bathhouse. “Yeah, that’s a big number,” Hochul said at a press conference announcing various swimming initiatives, including a $5 million lifeguard grant program. “This is the last major piece of infrastructure at Jones Beach that hasn’t been upgraded since the pool complex was shut down in 2008 because of the financial crisis.” Hochul said the new East Bathhouse would include splash pads, a learn-to-swim pool and a playground.

Last year, 8.6 million people visited Jones Beach, with almost half from New York City, Hochul said, adding that this year is the 95th anniversary of the beach. Jones Beach was designed by Robert Moses.
