PROSPECT-LEFFERTS GARDENS — LOYAL CUSTOMERS OF THE SCOOPS ICE CREAM PARLOR and a growing number of Brooklynites are rallying to save this popular Prospect-Lefferts Gardens store that has been a fixture here for 40 years, reports EATER NY. Scoops’ owner, Tony Fongyit, and many of his loyal customers follow an Ital vegan diet; his homemade vegan ice creams such as “Better Pecan” and “Great Nut” are popular with adults and children alike. Fongyit, now 74 and who has operated Scoops since 1984, has been told he has until Aug. 31 to vacate the storefront, which Jonas Equities purchased in 2015, and four years later attempted to evict the store when the lease expired. Unlike residential tenants, commercial tenants — particularly mom-and-pop stores and other small businesses — are not afforded certain protections when their leases expire. Jonas Equities never renewed Scoops’ lease and Fongyit has been compelled to deal with a month-to-month agreement.

According to the online petition, Scoops celebrated its 40th anniversary with a special event on Saturday, May 4. As of May 23, the petition had 3,065 signatures toward its “next goal” of 5,000, with 1,949 signatures in the past week alone.
