U.S. Senator Charles Schumer announced the Senate’s confirmation of Sanket Bulsara as a district judge for the Eastern District of New York. Bulsara, currently serving as an EDNY magistrate judge, is Bronx-born, Indian American and the son of immigrants.

“Sanket Bulsara is a first-rate legal mind and a dedicated, talented public servant who has served as a magistrate judge in the Eastern District of New York since 2017,” Schumer said in his announcement.

“Judge Bulsara was general counsel for the Securities and Exchange Commission, where he worked to protect investors and the country’s financial markets,” Schumer continued. “He is an expert in securities, contract, bankruptcy and regulatory matters, but his experience also extends to representing incarcerated individuals, victims of domestic violence and individuals on death row in pro bono cases.”

Bulsara’s broad range of experience includes representing incarcerated individuals and victims of domestic violence as a firm partner, serving as general counsel for the SEC and working as a magistrate judge. His confirmation, following Schumer’s recommendation and President Joe Biden’s nomination, marks him as the 195th lifetime judge confirmed by the Senate under the Biden administration.

Bulsara, a Harvard Law School graduate, has held various significant roles, including acting general counsel for the SEC and clerking for Hon. John Koeltl of the Southern District of New York. His parents, immigrants from India and Kenya, instilled in him the values of hard work and dedication. Bulsara’s father worked as an engineer for the City of New York, and his mother was a nurse. He resides in Long Island City with his wife, Christine DeLorenzo.

Bulsara was the deputy general counsel for appellate litigation, adjudication and enforcement at the SEC from 2015 to 2017, and he worked in private practice at Wilmer Cutler Pickering Hale and Dorr in New York and at Munger Tolles & Olson in Los Angeles.

He served as a special assistant district attorney at the Kings County District Attorney’s Office and was the manager of planning and data analysis in the New York City Department of Education, Division of Human Resources in Brooklyn. Bulsara earned his A.B., magna cum laude, from Harvard College in 1998. After being born in the Bronx, he moved to New Rochelle and later Edgemont, New York.

Editor’s note: This article originally claimed, based on information provided by Senator Schumer’s Office, that Judge Bulsara is the First South Asian District Court Judge for the EDNY and the Second Circuit. That distinction belongs to Judge Diane Gujarati. The Brooklyn Eagle regrets the error and apologizes to Judge Gujarati.
