SANTO DOMINGO — Water collection leads to an improvised swimming pool: A girl plays in a water container in the Los Guandules neighborhood of Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, Monday, May 20, 2024. Recognizing that the Dominican Republic is extremely susceptible to climate change, the government initiated a pilot project in the Colonial City of Santo Domingo to reduce the city’s carbon footprint and improve access to water through rainwater harvesting systems. The IDB Cities Lab worked with the local government in Santo Domingo and the Dominican Republic’s tourism ministry to audition rainwater harvesting systems in homes in the historic center, according to the International Institute for Environment and Development.

The project’s goal is to contribute to the water-saving component so the basic needs of each home can be met, with the hope for a bonus in exploring energy savings and reduction in greenhouse gases.

PAKISTAN — Nature’s revenge … and relief — as more areas are hit with extreme heat and flooding: A man cools himself off during a hot summer day at a park in Karachi, Pakistan, Tuesday, May 21, 2024. Authorities in Pakistan on Tuesday urged people to stay indoors as the country is hit by an extreme heat wave that threatens to bring dangerously high temperatures and yet another round of glacial-driven floods. The temperature rose four to six degrees centigrade (Celsius) above the monthly average in the province on Saturday — two days earlier than the country’s Met Department forecast. The hottest city in Sindh on Saturday was Shaheed Benazirabad, where the maximum temperature was 48.5°C.

One weatherman said that expected thunderstorms never developed, partly because of a drop in humidity in the region.

NEW YORK — Check out the real-life flower: A dog attends the Pet Gala fashion show at AKC Museum of The Dog on Monday, May 20, 2024, in New York. During the Pet Gala, each dog showcases couture similar to what celebrities wore at the Met Gala two weeks prior. Designer Anthony Rubio established what is now an annual tradition, which he says is not to poke fun at the rhyming Met Gala but rather to let beloved pets in on the fashion and costume as the canines dress up as some of the models. This year’s gala dress theme was the Garden of Time, accompanying the Met’s “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” exhibit.

Tickets to the Pet Gala, at $300 each, benefited the event host, the American Kennel Club Museum of the Dog, which returned to New York City five years ago after three decades in the Midwest.

LIMA — Workers up to code, but their building is not: Masked sex workers protest outside their brothel “Las Cucardas” after it was shuttered by city authorities in Lima, Peru, Monday, May 20, 2024. The municipal government closed the brothel on May 15 for not having their building up to code. The signs read in Spanish, from left, “No to informality,” “United sex workers will never be defeated,” and “We want to work.”

Unlike NYC’s Dept. of Buildings, government agencies did not provide a list of building violations for the Las Cucardas Brothel. However, it was founded in 1973 and today is one of Lima’s best-known brothels. Reportedly, since the 1990s, Víctor Hugo Shimabukuro Nakajima, of Japanese heritage, called “El Rey [king] de Las Cucardas,” has been the boss.

GREECE — Jubilant in judge’s dismissal: One of nine Egyptians on trial for migrant smuggling waves to the media persons as he leaves the court in Kalamata, southwestern Greece, on Tuesday, May 21, 2024. A Greek judge dismissed charges against nine Egyptian men accused of causing a shipwreck that killed hundreds of migrants last year and sent shockwaves through the European Union’s border protection and asylum operations after a prosecutor told the court Greece lacked jurisdiction. The June 14, 2023 shipwreck involved The Adriana, an overcrowded fishing trawler that had been en route from Libya northward to Italy with hundreds of asylum-seekers on board when it sank on June 14 in international waters off the southwestern coast of Greece. It was considered one of the worst disasters of the year, with more than 500 lost. Only 104 people were rescued from the overcrowded fishing trawler.

The nine Egyptian men were accused of being part of the trawler’s crew who mistreated the migrant passengers.

GREECE — Not everyone agreed with judge’s dismissal: A protester bleeds after clashes with police outside a courthouse in Kalamata, southwestern Greece, on Tuesday, May 21, 2024. Nine Egyptian men went on trial in southern Greece on Tuesday, accused of causing a shipwreck that killed hundreds of migrants and sent shockwaves through the European Union’s border protection and asylum operations. One of the men’s defense lawyers instead turned the court’s attention to the cause of the sinking, blaming the Greek coast guard and Europe’s migration policies, and said it was essential to “make sure that nothing like that would happen again,” according to the Associated Press.

The judge dismissed the case. Had the nine men been convicted, they would have faced life in prison, according to the Associated Press.
