BROOKLYN — Red bird, red bulb: This Northern Cardinal in The River Café Park under the Brooklyn Bridge seem to favor the red light bulb over others used to decorate the park walkway. The Northern Cardinal is just one of more than 130 species seen by bird watchers in Brooklyn Bridge Park and neighborhing bird refuges, such as The River Café Park.

GREECE — Nature’s revenge? A fire burns a forest to embers near a house in Avantas (or, Avas) village, near Alexandroupolis in the northeastern Evros region of Greece, Monday. The area comprising the municipality of Alexandroupolis and the village of Avantas has contained town-and-city-like settlements since the Iron Age, and has been inhabited by Bulgarian, Turkish and Greek people. There’s no telling how much history is lost in the fire. An editor of Our World in Photos is descended from the peoples of northeastern Greece in nearby Salonika (Thessaloniki).
