U.S. Attorney Breon Peace establishes Conviction Integrity Committee
Breon Peace, U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of New York, unveiled an initiative on Monday aimed at furthering the integrity of judicial processes. A Conviction Integrity Committee has been formed, setting a precedent for the evaluation and review of claims regarding wrongful convictions.
Assistant U.S. Attorney Kayla Bensing was appointed as the Conviction Integrity Coordinator in October 2022. The newly minted position is designed to formalize the conviction integrity process and foster collaborations with law enforcement partners involved in similar efforts to uphold the sanctity of all convictions.
“It is critical to this Office’s law enforcement mission and our sacred responsibility to seek justice and uphold the public trust that, whenever there is reason to doubt the integrity of conviction, we move quickly to evaluate the prosecution and take the necessary steps to achieve a just result,” Peace said.
“From my first day as the U.S. Attorney, it has been my priority to pursue justice and protect the civil rights of everyone in our community, without bias and with compassion, and I am confident that the measures announced today will help accomplish that goal.”
