“Police Officer Adeed Fayaz’s death is a terrible and tragic loss for his family, friends, NYPD colleagues, and the public he selflessly served,” District Attorney Eric Gonzalez said. “My thoughts are with all who are grieving his loss and my office will vigorously seek justice on his behalf.”

The incident occurred on Feb. 4, 2023, in the vicinity of 452 Ruby Street, in East New York.

Officer Fayaz and his brother-in-law went to meet with the seller of a Honda Pilot advertised for $24,000 on Facebook Marketplace. The defendant, Randy Jones, allegedly arranged the meeting and advertised the vehicle. However, when Officer Fayaz and his brother-in-law arrived and left the cash in Officer Fayaz’s car, the defendant allegedly pulled out a gun and demanded the money.

According to the investigation, when the defendant was told that they didn’t have the money, he shot Officer Fayaz in the head and fled the scene. Officer Fayaz’s brother-in-law grabbed his gun and engaged in a gun battle with the defendant, who managed to escape.

Officer Fayaz was then taken to Brookdale Hospital and was pronounced dead on February 7, 2023. His death sparked an intense investigation by the NYPD, which led to the defendant’s eventual arrest on the same day.

In addition to the charges related to Officer Fayaz’s death, Randy Jones was also indicted for another incident that occurred on January 13, 2023. He allegedly lured another person to the same location using Facebook Marketplace and robbed them of approximately $18,000 after pulling out a gun and demanding the money.
