BAY RIDGE – U.S. Rep. Nicole Malliotakis (NY-11) of Brooklyn and Staten Island announced that $2 million in federal funding has been sanctioned for the Bay Ridge Center (BRC) at 411 Ovington Ave.

The funds will be used to make “critical renovations” to the center.

Additionally, Malliotakis joined BRC leadership in breaking ground on a new 21,000-square-foot facility to meet the expanding needs of current clients and the community. NYC Department for the Aging has identified Southwest Brooklyn as a community expecting a significant increase (greater than 75%) in demand for senior services over the next 7-8 years.

“For almost 50 years, the Bay Ridge Center has provided Brooklyn seniors with a place to exercise their minds and bodies, grow their independence, and increase their community involvement,” Congresswoman Malliotakis said. “I’m happy to announce $2 million in federal funds to help BRC complete construction of their new center and was present today as they broke ground. I am confident that this massive expansion and upgrades will allow BRC to serve so many more seniors in our community with the services they deserve and provide a comfortable place to gather and thrive for years to come.”

Specifically, BRC will use the funding to make improvements to its senior center’s drop-off area and entrance, install new bathrooms that are ADA compliant, add a food-prep kitchen, upgrade its electrical HVAC systems, and install fire protection including a new sprinkler system.

“Bay Ridge Center is incredibly thankful to Congresswoman Malliotakis and her unwavering support for seniors and our center,” said Toff Fliedner, BRC Executive Director. “The federal funding is a game changer that ensures Bay Ridge Center is able to offer transformative care to seniors within our community now and into the future.”

In reference to Nicole’s support during COVID, former BRC Executive Director Marianne Nicolosi stated: “I will never forget, Nicole will always be a hero.”
