The District Attorneys Association of the State of New York (DAASNY) held its annual Winter Conference in Manhattan from Feb. 1 through Feb. 3 where it honored four prosecutors including Miss Gregory of the Kings County District Attorney’s Office.

Prosecutors and their staff from all over the state, including the Attorney General’s Office, were in attendance to discuss topics they are facing including discovery, Raise the Age, gun violence, and prosecutorial misconduct. They also got an opportunity to see Gregory and three others honored with the prestigious Hogan Award and Morgenthau Awards.

“I am proud of the commitment of my fellow prosecutors to the people of our state and to a fair criminal justice system,” said DAASNY President J. Anthony Jordan. “I continue to be impressed by what the prosecutors of this state do every day and I value the dialogue that flows when my colleagues from all over the state are able to speak face-to-face about the critical public safety issues facing our state.”

Gregory graduated from Florida A&M University and Georgetown University Law Center and began working at the Kings County DA’s Office in 1996. She currently serves as chief of the Special Victims Bureau in Brooklyn.

Gregory received the Robert M. Morgenthau Award for her work that started in 2000, when NYC began testing hundreds of backlogged DNA samples from previously ignored sexual assault evidence collection kits against newly available DNA databases.

Gregory became one of the first to successfully prosecute cold cases using these DNA matches. She also assisted in the first successful sexual abuse protection case against Catholic priests in New York City after old files were turned over to prosecutors by the Brooklyn Diocese.

“Miss Gregory is one of the Kings County District Attorney’s Office’s most talented and tenacious attorneys,” said a statement issued by DAASNY. “She has skillfully prosecuted and supervised the prosecution of thousands of individuals who have committed despicable crimes against some of New York’s most vulnerable victims, including children and survivors of sexual violence.

“Ms. Gregory always approaches these cases directly and unerringly, ensuring impeccable fairness for each defendant, modeling (sic) the highest standards of integrity and ethical conduct for the hundreds of attorneys she has supervised and mentored,” the statement continued.

The Morgenthau Award was established in 2009 and is given to an assistant district attorney whose “professional accomplishments, honesty, integrity, and commitment to justice exemplify Mr. Morgenthau’s high standards during his tenure as New York County District Attorney.”

In addition to Gregory, Peter O. Kennedy, chief of the Technical Investigations Bureau in the Bronx District Attorney’s Office, and Matthew Burin, first assistant attorney for the Warren County District Attorney’s Office, also received the Morgenthau Award. William J. Fitzpatrick from Onondaga County received the Frank S. Hogan Award.
