PARK SLOPE — On top of serving a regular clientele, as it has since 1971, CHiPS (Community Help in Park Slope) is now feeding hundreds of asylum seekers from Latin America, who were bussed to NYC in recent weeks and are now being housed in the Park Slope neighborhood. Many come to CHiPS for hot meals each day, and to get readymade food to bring back to the shelter. CHiPS can’t meet this skyrocketing demand without help.

Community members are urged to join CHiPS and help organize, prepare or serve hot meals. All volunteers are welcome, and Spanish-speaking neighbors are needed every day. Volunteers are urged to email volunteer@chipsonline.

Charitable neighbors can also donate directly in a number of ways: Microwaveable meals (shelf stable — refrigerators not available); microwaveable rice packs and bean packs; snacks (bars, cookies, snack bags); juice containers or boxes; cereals and shelf-stable milk; eggs; hot meals for serving at CHiPS; hairnets for cooks and volunteers; winter clothes for children only; an industrial fridge to expand capacity for perishable items.

Donations may be dropped off at CHiPS, 200 4th Ave. (between Sackett & Degraw), from 9 a.m. and 2 p.m. Mon-Sat. Or make a tax-deductible contribution, for purchase of food and other supplies in bulk: https://give.chipsonline.org.

Neighbors unaware of the history of CHiPS service should visit the website for an inspiring education. CHiPS organizers have issued a plea to Park Slope and environs: “Please help CHiPS welcome our new neighbors while continuing to serve those who have long depended on them!”
