Salvatore Scibetta, president of the Columbian Lawyers Association of Brooklyn, was promoted by Mayor Eric Adams and is now vice chair of the New York City Board of Standards and Appeals (BSA).

Scibetta has extensive experience in land use, planning and zoning, as he has served as a commissioner on the BSA since 2018. Prior to that, Scibetta was a partner at Lee Anav Chung LLP, which focused primarily on matrimonial cases.

The mayor’s announcement of Scibetta’s promotion came on Dec. 30 when he also announced the promotion of Shampa Chanda as chair of the BSA.

“In their time as Board of Standards and Appeals commissioners, Shampa and Sal have demonstrated their expertise, their abilities, and their commitment to New Yorkers, and I know they will continue to serve the city faithfully in their new roles,” Adams said. “Our administration is using our land use and zoning tools aggressively to build the housing New Yorkers need and to help our economy recover. We look forward to continuing that work with this team leading BSA.”

Scibetta, who graduated from Brooklyn Law School in 2006, first began his legal career at the New York City Administration for Children’s Services before he went into private practice.

“It has been a privilege to serve on the Board of Standards and Appeals for the last five years, and I am honored to be designated vice chair,” said Sal Scibetta, incoming vice chair, BSA. “I am a firm believer that New York City is the greatest city in the world, and I look forward to working with my fellow commissioners to uphold that benchmark of excellence.”

Scibetta has led the Columbian Lawyers since his installation during a ceremony performed by Hon. Carl Landicino this past June during a dinner at El Caribe in Mill Basin. He came into that position already firmly established within the Brooklyn legal community as he has also served as an active member in both the Brooklyn Bar Association and the Richmond County Bar Associations.

“Mr. Scibetta will serve as a great asset to the city as vice chair of the Board of Standards and Appeals,” said Lawrence S. Knipel, administrative judge, civil term, Kings County and Supreme Court justice, Kings County. “His deep academic understanding of the law, combined with his practical approach, has solidified him as one of the finest attorneys this city has to offer.”

Scibetta is also on the board of the Staten Island Children’s Museum.
