Terriers fall to visiting Longwood

Second-half rally falls short as Terriers drop second straight

Rob Higgins scored 14 points and Josiah Harris added 10, but the St. Francis Brooklyn men’s basketball team suffered a 63-57 loss to visiting Longwood Tuesday afternoon in front of 102 fans at The ARC.

No other Terrier managed to reach double figures in scoring as SFC (4-6) dropped its second straight despite pushing the defending Big South champions down the stretch.

After trailing by eight points at the half, the Terriers forced three second-half ties before the Lancers (6-5) went ahead to stay, 49-47, with just over seven minutes remaining on Walyn Napper’s jumper.

Isiah Wilkins poured in a game-high 22 points for Longwood, which was the third SFC opponent this season that reached last year’s NCAA Tournament.

The Terriers will visit Hartford Saturday afternoon before completing the non-conferenc portion of their schedule Dec. 22 vs. Medgar Evers.

SFC’s Northeast Conference slate begins on New Year’s Eve at Central Connecticut State.

The Long Island University men were preparing for Wednesday’s tilt at Albany in Troy, N.Y., after suffering their season-high seventh straight defeat, 114-61, at the University of Connecticut on Saturday.

Jacob Johnson scored 19 points and R.J. Greene added 17 for the Sharks (1-8), who couldn’t quite keep up with the undefeated fifth-ranked Huskies (11-0) in front of 10,167 fans at Gampel Pavilion.

On the women’s side, Mariah Elohim put up a season-high 22 points, drilling five 3-pointers, but LIU dropped a 90-47 decision to visiting Columbia Tuesday in front of 120 fans at Downtown’s Steinberg Wellness Center.

Jaida Patrick had 24 points for the Lady Lions (10-2), who led by 12 at intermission.

The Sharks (2-9) will be back on the hardwood Dec. 22 at Manhattan College.

The SFC ladies will be out to end a 10-game slide Wednesday at Lafayette College in Easton, Pennsylvania.

The Terriers (1-10) are coming off Saturday’s 75-59 loss at Stony Brook despite a career high-tying 24 points from Alyssa Fisher, who filled the stat sheet with a trio of 3-pointers, five steals, six rebounds and four assists.

Over at Brooklyn College, Ericka James hit five shots from beyond the arc en route to 28 points, pacing the Lady Bulldogs to a 72-56 win over William Patterson Tuesday night before 73 fans at the West Quad Center.

Gianna Gotti added 16 points, an eye-popping eight steals, nine assists and seven rebounds for BC (4-6, 1-0 CUNYAC), which is off until Dec. 30, when it will visit Cabrini University in Radnor, Pa.

The BC men lost 83-69 at Ramapo College in Mahwah, N.J., Tuesday, but Elisha Park was impressive for the Bulldogs (2-9) with a game-high 23 points and seven rebounds.

David McFadden finished with 14 points for the BC, which will host William Patterson College at the West Quad Center on Dec. 30.

LIU announced Tuesday that former assistant athletic director Ryan Kelly has been promoted to deputy athletic director after his involvement with sport supervision and department-wide recruitment efforts.

“I want to thank Ryan for his leadership, helping our department with the recruitment of exceptional student-athletes, sport supervision and helping us improve our general operations,” Sharks Director of Athletics Dr. William E. Martinov Jr. said.

“His new role will assist with our overall organizational structure moving forward, specifically by providing the leadership of the Post campus’ daily operations. while maintaining our steadfast efforts to recruit top-level student-athletes.”
