Southeast Asian leaders convened in the Cambodian capital on Thursday, faced with the challenge of trying to curtail escalating violence in Myanmar while the country’s military-led government shows no signs of complying with the group’s peace plan.

BRAZIL — Palm hearts: Raimundo Brazao dos Santos transported acai palm hearts collected for sale on an island in the Bailique Archipelago, in northern Brazil, on Saturday, Sept. 10, 2022. The climate changes in the region are an increasing threat to the omnipresent acai palm trees. In many places, sea erosion is taking them. And in areas closer to the sea, the acai berries began to taste different.

UKRAINE — Shelling: A tail of a multiple rocket stuck out of the ground near the recently recaptured village of Zakitne, on Wednesday. Villages and towns in Ukraine saw more heavy fighting and shelling on Wednesday as Ukrainian and Russian forces strained to advance on different fronts after more than 8 1/2 months of war. At least nine civilians were killed and 24 others were wounded in 24 hours, the Ukrainian president’s office said.

SENEGAL — Plastic Man: Kids looked at environmental activist Modou Fall, who many simply call “Plastic Man,” while he walked on the Yarakh Beach littered by trash and plastics in Dakar, on Tuesday, Nov. 8, 2022. As he walked, plastics dangled from his arms and legs, rustling in the wind while strands dragged on the ground.
