ITALY — Rescue: A rescue helicopter hovered over the Punta Rocca glacier near Canazei, in the Italian Alps, on Monday, a day after a huge chunk of the glacier broke loose, sending an avalanche of ice, snow, and rocks onto hikers. Rescuers said conditions downslope from the glacier, which had been melting for decades, were still too unstable to immediately send rescuers and dogs into the area to look for others buried under tons of debris.

Saudi Arabia was expected to receive one million Muslims to attend the Hajj pilgrimage, which will begin on July 7, after two years of limiting the numbers because of the coronavirus pandemic.

AUSTRALIA — Floods: Traffic signs sat submerged along a flooded road in Londonderry on the outskirts of Sydney, on Monday. More than 30,000 residents of Sydney and its surrounding areas were told to evacuate or prepare to abandon their homes on Monday as Australia’s largest city braced for what could be its worst flooding in 18 months.
