NY lawmakers begin voting on legal protections for abortions
New York would expand legal protections for people seeking and providing abortions in the state under a legislation package that lawmakers began debating Tuesday.
Democratic Gov. Kathy Hochul has called for New York to increase legal protections for abortion services in case the U.S. Supreme Court overrules Roe v. Wade’s nationwide right to abortion this summer. Hochul didn’t specify Tuesday whether she would sign the half dozen abortion-related bills that lawmakers plan to pass this week.
“In anticipation of a Supreme Court decision that could overturn Roe v. Wade, Governor Hochul has been taking action to safeguard abortion access in New York, including directing $35 million to support providers, and we have been working with the legislature on additional actions to protect abortion rights in our state before the end of session,” Hochul said.
