The Brooklyn Women’s Bar Association will host its annual dinner in person at the Liberty Warehouse in Red Hook on Thursday, May 12 where it will honor Justice Sylvia Hinds-Radix and Past President Carrie Anne Cavallo.

Justice Hinds-Radix, also a past president of the BWBA, sat on the bench in the Appellate Division, Second Department until this year when she became the NYC Corporation Counsel. She will be presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award by Hon. Genine Edwards.

Cavallo will receive the prestigious Sybil Hart Kooper Award, which will be presented by Hon. Joanne Quiñones.

Carrie Anne Cavallo will receive the Sybil Hart Kooper Award.

The BWBA didn’t let COVID stop it from hosting a gala last year, however, it was virtual. This will be its first in-person gala since 2019.

“We did it last year too, we weren’t going to let COVID stop us,” immediate Past President Natoya McGhie said. “We’re thrilled to be back celebrating this year in person.”

Tickets for the gala cost $250 each and are available through the BWBA’s website — www.brooklynwomensbar.org.

A date hasn’t been announced yet, but the BWBA is expected to install its next president, Susan Mauro, during a ceremony sometime in early June at the Brooklyn Bar Association in Brooklyn Heights.

Gala Season

KCCBA President Darran Winslow.

The Kings County Criminal Bar Association is also hosting its own gala at Giando on the Water in Williamsburg on Wednesday, May 4.

It’s new president Darran Winslow explained that many judges and district attorneys have confirmed their attendance already, and members of the association are excited to get back together for the first time as a group since COVID.

“The KCCBA is thrilled to be hosting our spring dinner at Giando,” Winslow said. “One of our core missions is to provide opportunities to connect, to network, and to solidify the ties that make our Brooklyn legal community so special.”

There will be no awards given out this year, however, the association will recognize Past President Jim Koenig, who recently passed away.

To buy tickets, email President Winslow at [email protected] for a PayPal link. Tickets are $100 in advance or $125 at the door.

Finally Passing the Baton

Christopher Caputo, president of the Columbian Lawyers Association will have his final meeting after a two-year term as president.

After two years at the helm of the Columbian Lawyers Association of Brooklyn, President Christopher Caputo will finally hand over the reins to the next president during the association’s annual gala at El Caribe on June 24.

Caputo said that he has greatly enjoyed being president of the Columbian Lawyers, even during such a hard time as during the pandemic, but that he’s out of jokes so it’s a good time for Salvatore Scibetta to take over.

Scibetta will be installed during a brief ceremony during the gala.

Caputo has just one more meeting as president first — on May 18th at Gargiulo’s Restaurant in Coney Island. The speaker will be Surrogate Court Judge Rosemarie Montalbano.

Celebrating 150

BBA Executive Director Avery Eli Okin will be honored at the BBA’s 150th Anniversary celebration at El Caribe on June 2nd.

The Brooklyn Bar Association will, of course, be hosting its 150th Anniversary party at El Caribe on Thursday, June 2.

President Armena Gayle and the Annual Awards Committee has selected Avery Eli Okin, who has served the association as the executive director for 36 years, as this year’s honoree. The BBA will also honor its past presidents as a way to honor its history during the historic occasion.

Okin graduated from Brooklyn Law School and went to work for the BBA four years later, immediately ascending to the executive director position. Under his leadership, the BBA thrived for nearly four decades as he took every president under his arm and showed them the ropes.

The past presidents are often quick to acknowledge his guidance as the key to their own success. Okin has always been very proud of his relationships with the past presidents and has a photo of himself with each one from his time working at 123 Remsen Street.

Tickets and sponsorship opportunities are available for the 150th Anniversary dinner at the BBA’s website — www.BrooklynBar.org.
