Beijing is in the middle of mass testing millions of residents after cases were discovered over the weekend. The city reported over 30 new cases Wednesday, several of which were asymptomatic.

NETHERLANDS — King’s Day: Orange-clad people celebrated King’s Day in Amsterdam on Wednesday. After two years of celebrations muted by coronavirus lockdowns, the Netherlands marked the 55th anniversary of King Willem-Alexander of the House of Orange with street parties, music festivals, and a national poll showing trust in the monarch ebbing away.

FRANCE — Oldest person: Sister Andre sat at the Sainte Catherine Laboure care home in Toulon, on Wednesday. With the death of Kane Tanaka at age 119, the world’s oldest human is now Lucile Randon, a French nun known as Sister Andre, aged 118, according to The Gerontology Research Group.

INDIA — Landfill fire: A ragpicker looked for reusable items while a fire raged at the Bhalswa landfill in New Delhi, on Wednesday. The landfill that covered an area bigger than 50 football fields, with a pile taller than a 17-story building, caught fire on Tuesday evening, turning into a smoldering heap that blazed well into the night. India’s capital, in the midst of a record-shattering heat wave, was enveloped in thick acrid smoke.
