NEPAL — New Year: A Nepalese boy watched devotees pull down the lingo, a long wooden pole symbolizing a phallus, during Biska Jatra festival in Bhaktapur, on Thursday. During this festival, also regarded as Nepalese New Year, images of Hindu god Bhairava and his female counterpart Bhadrakali are enshrined in two large chariots and pulled to an open square after which rituals and festivities are performed.

VENEZUELA — Anniversary: Members of the Venezuelan National Bolivarian Militia, a branch of the National Armed Forces created by the late President Hugo Chavez, raised their weapons during the celebration of the militia’s 13th anniversary, in Caracas, on Wednesday. Government supporters also commemorated the 20th anniversary of Chavez’s return to power after a failed coup in 2002.

PAKISTAN — Vaisakhi Festival: Sikh pilgrims attended the Vaisakhi festival at the shrine of Gurdwara Punja Sahib, the second most sacred place for Sikhs, in Hasan Abdal, on Thursday. Thousands of Sikh pilgrims arrived from neighboring India and other countries to attend the harvest festival that is regionally known by many names and marks the Solar New Year.
