LITURGIES FOR UKRAINE AND RUSSIA: The Most Reverend Robert Brennan, Bishop of Brooklyn, led a Holy Hour of Prayer for Peace on Friday at the Cathedral Basilica of St. James.  At Noon, Bishop Brennan then consecrated Ukraine and Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Following the Act of Consecration, he celebrated Mass for the Solemnity of the Annunciation of the Lord, in accordance with Pope Francis’ request that all Bishops join him spiritually in prayer as he consecrated Ukraine and Russia to the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

Bishop Brennan said in his homily, “Here we did something a little bit different, we all stopped in place and joined together to be one, that sense of unity is part of the act of consecration, it’s not just one person offering prayer but of us all gathering together.”

MAYOR DEMANDS CITY GETS CONTROL OF TRAFFIC SAFETY TOOLS: New York City must be given control over traffic safety tools, particularly speed cameras, says Mayor Eric Adams, who on Friday led a coalition of administration officials, legislators, and advocates urging Albany to give them more authority tackle the spike in traffic violence that has played out throughout the COVID-19 pandemic. Mayor Adams called on the state Legislature to pass legislation empowering the city to set speed limits and control the automated traffic enforcement program’s speed cameras which, under current law, can be active only Monday to Friday, 6 a.m. to 10 p.m., with the program set to expire this year.

Mayor Adams and the coalition visited the intersection of Ocean Avenue and Beverley Road near P.S. 245 in Flatbush, Brooklyn — the site of a fatal speeding crash that took place on August 18, 2020, at 3:30 a.m. on a Tuesday, an hour in which the speed cameras were turned off, as required by New York state law.

HECTIC INTERSECTION IS SUBJECT OF DOT PRESENTATION: NYC DOT Pedestrian Unit began studying the intersection of Broadway at Flushing Ave. and Graham Ave. for street improvements, which will be the subject of a public hearing at Community Board 1. The study, launched in response to safety concerns received from the community and NYPD 90th precinct, focuses on this multi-modal, Vision Zero intersection which is bustling with pedestrians and street activity, with direct access to multiple bus lines and the J and M trains.

The meeting will give the DOT’s Pedestrian Unit the opportunity to share the proposed redesign with the community prior to implementation of these changes.

NYU-TANDON PROFESSOR ON SAFEGUARDING CRYPTOCURRENCY: A professor of computer science and engineering at Tandon School of Engineering is quoted in a recent Wall Street Journal story titled, “How Investors Can Keep Crypto Assets Safe. Damon McCoy, associate professor of computer science and engineering at NYU-Tandon, explains, according to reporter Cheryl Winokur Munk, “One method involves using two wallets: a hot wallet, which is accessible online, to be used on a day-to-day basis for spending or trading; and a cold wallet, such as a piece of hardware, which remains offline.”

Says Prof. McCoy, “The hot wallet is perhaps more vulnerable to theft, so you put just enough for your predicted expenses in that one. It’s a balancing act.”
