HONG KONG — Virus outbreak: Patients lay on hospital beds as they waited at a temporary holding area outside Caritas Medical Center on Wednesday. There was visible evidence that Hong Kong hospitals were becoming overwhelmed by the latest COVID-19 surge, with patients on stretchers and in tents being seen to by medical personnel on Wednesday outside the Caritas hospital.

NEW YORK — Explosion: Emergency personnel worked at the site of a gas tanker accident in Rockville Center, early on Wednesday. A tanker carrying gasoline lost control, crashed into a vacant building, and burst into flames on Long Island early on Wednesday, injuring the truck’s driver and three firefighters who responded, authorities said.

UKRAINE — Day of Unity: A 200-meter long Ukrainian flag was unfolded at the Olympiyskiy stadium in Kyiv, on Wednesday. As Western officials warned a Russian invasion could happen at any time, the Ukrainian President Zelenskyy called for a Day of Unity, with Ukrainians encouraged to raise Ukrainian flags across the country.

SOMALIA — Wreckage: A young boy ran past the wreckage of a vehicle destroyed in an attack on police and checkpoints on the outskirts of the capital Mogadishu, on Wednesday. The attack by the al-Shabab extremist group on Wednesday killed five people and wounded 16, police said.

NEPAL — Protest: Nepalese protesters opposed a proposed U.S. half-billion dollars grant for Nepal as they clashed with police outside the parliament in Kathmandu, on Wednesday. The proposal was scheduled to be presented in the parliament on Wednesday for approval but was postponed because of disagreement between the political parties. The money was meant to be used for the construction of power transmission lines and the improvement of roads in the Himalayan nation, but the parties alleged that it comes with conditions that are not acceptable for the country.
