AFGHANISTAN — Collapsing healthcare: A nurse took care of a baby in the neonatal intensive care unit of Malalai Maternity hospital in Kabul on Thursday. Afghanistan’s health care system was on the brink of collapse and has functioned only with a lifeline from aid organizations.

SOUTH AFRICA — Variant research: Sandile Cele, a researcher at the Africa Health Research Institute in Durban, worked on the omicron variant of the COVID-19 virus on Wednesday. An analysis of data from South Africa, where the new variant is driving a surge in infections, suggested the Pfizer vaccine offers less defense against infection from omicron and reduced, but still good, protection from hospitalization.

UKRAINE — Mortar shell: Liudmyla Momot wept as she searched for any still-usable items on Friday, Dec. 10, in the debris of her house in the village of Nevelske in eastern Ukraine, that was struck by a mortar shell fired by Russia-backed separatists. Her village is only about 3 kilometers (2 miles) from the line of contact between the separatists and the Ukrainian military and has been emptied of all but five people. Small arms fire frequently is heard in the daytime, giving way to the booms of light artillery and mortars after dusk.
