INDIA — Mourning for elephants: People stood around a wild male elephant, one of two killed by a train, in Durung Pathar, in the northeastern Indian state of Assam, on Wednesday. Speeding trains have run down dozens of wild elephants in Assam in the past, forcing the Indian Railways, which runs the trains, to regulate speed in known elephant corridors.

SPAIN — Abandoned cats: Abandoned cats wandered in search of food on a road covered by ash and blocked by the lava at the exclusion zone near the volcano on the Canary island of La Palma, on Friday. The volcano continued erupting as seismic activity in the area increased.
