INDIA — Elephants: A woman worshiped a wild male elephant, one of two killed by a train in Durung Pathar, in the northeastern Indian state of Assam, on Wednesday. Speeding trains have run down dozens of wild elephants in Assam in the past, forcing the Indian Railways, which runs the trains, to regulate speed in known elephant corridors. Assam, which has a history of man-elephant conflict, has an estimated 5,000 wild Asiatic elephants.

AFGHANISTAN — Education: Afghan girls participated in a lesson inside a classroom at Tajrobawai Girls High School, in Herat, on Thursday. While most high school girls in Afghanistan were forbidden to attend class by the country’s Taliban rulers, one major exception are those in the western province of Herat. For weeks, girls there have been attending high school classes, thanks to a unique effort by teachers and parents to persuade local Taliban administrators to allow schools to reopen.
