FRANCE — Unwrapping: Rope access technicians worked on the removal of the wrapped Arc de Triomphe monument, in Paris, on Monday. The “L’Arc de Triomphe, Wrapped” project by late artist Christo and Jeanne-Claude was on view from Sept. 18 to Oct. 3. The famed Paris monument was wrapped in 25,000 square meters of fabric in silvery blue, and with 3,000 meters of red rope.

BOLIVIA — Coca riot: Riot police ran in a cloud of teargas during clashes with anti-government coca farmers near the coca market in La Paz, on Monday. The anti-government coca farmers retook control of the coca market by force after more than two weeks of violent protests in a dispute for the leadership of their association.

SPAIN — Ash: Ash covered a house, car, and garden as in the background a volcano erupted on the Canary island of La Palma, on Monday. More earthquakes rattled the Spanish island of La Palma, as the lava flow from an erupting volcano surged after part of the crater collapsed. Officials said they don’t expect to evacuate any more people from the area because the fiery molten rock was following the same route to the sea as earlier flows.

Surging inflation of food and electricity are affecting the poor, with rising gas prices forcing some to cook with firewood and alcohol.

CALIFORNIA — Oil spill: An aerial photo showed floating barriers known as booms set up to try to stop further incursion into the Wetlands Talbert Marsh after an oil spill in Huntington Beach, on Monday. A major oil spill off the coast of Southern California fouled popular beaches and killed wildlife while crews scrambled on Sunday, to contain the crude before it spread further into protected wetlands.
