JAPAN — New Prime Minister: Fumio Kishida bowed after being elected as Japan’s prime minister at the parliament’s lower house on Monday, in Tokyo. Kishida was formally elected on Monday as Japan’s new prime minister in a parliamentary vote, replacing Yoshihide Suga.

CALIFORNIA — Oil spill: Oil washed up in Huntington Beach on Sunday. One of the largest oil spills in recent Southern California history fouled popular beaches and killed wildlife while crews scrambled on Sunday to contain the crude before it spread further into protected wetlands. At least 126,000 gallons of oil spilled into the waters off Orange County, according to a statement from the city of Huntington Beach.

INDIA — Detained: On Monday, in New Delhi, paramilitary force soldiers detained an activist protesting against Sunday’s killing of four farmers in Uttar Pradesh state after being run over by a car owned by India’s junior home minister. Indian authorities suspended internet services and barred political leaders from entering a northern town on Monday to calm tensions after nine people were killed in a deadly escalation of a yearlong demonstration against contentious agriculture laws.
