FRANCIS OF ASSISI FEAST DAY: Brooklyn’s pets had a starring role in the faith community in observance of the feast of St. Francis, observed each year on October 4, which falls today. St. Anselm Roman Catholic Church in Bay Ridge hosted a special Blessing of Pets, which calls upon God to bless the animals with good health and to keep them safe from all harm.

Saint Francis, who lived in the 12th century, and who wrote poetry — much of which has become canticles of the Church — thanking God for all creation, is the Church’s patron saint of animals and the environment.

NEW PAVILION AT MAIMONIDES: Maimonides Medical Center in Borough Park celebrated the grand opening of a new doctors’ pavilion designed to make health care smoother for providers and patients alike. Patients can now meet with their doctors in private, spacious exam rooms bathed in natural light, and access ancillary services like diagnostic testing and blood work in one convenient location.

Multispecialty Pavilion has been designed from the ground up, in a process that engaged Maimonides’ clinical teams in the planning of each floor.

NEW LIBRARY SERVING DUMBO AREA: The first new Brooklyn Public Library location since 1983 will have its grand opening on Tuesday, October 12, Community Board 2 has announced. The Adams Street Library, (9 Adams St. between John and Plymouth streets) for which the design plan started in 2019 for an older industrial building includes 6,565 square feet of raw space, now transformed to house library materials, meeting rooms, facilities and programming space for children, teens and adults.

A nearby annex pop-up serving as an interim library, will close after October 8.

HEARING ON HURRICANE PREPAREDNESS: The Honorable Deanne Criswell, administrator with the Federal Emergency Management Agency will testify next week at a hearing (to be livestreamed on YouTube) on hurricane readiness, in the wake of deaths and flooding from the deadly Hurricane Ida. Rep. Carolyn B. Maloney (D-12th District) and chair of the Committee on Oversight and Reform, has convened the hearing, set for tomorrow, Tuesday, October at 11 a.m., which will focus on the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s (FEMA) recovery efforts following Hurricane Ida, improvements the Biden Administration has made to accelerate recovery efforts following natural disasters, and steps FEMA must take to implement an environmental justice strategy to improve equity in disaster recovery and build climate resilient communities.

The National Weather Service had issued an emergency flash-flood warning, noting, “[T]his particular warning for NYC is the second time we’ve ever issued a Flash-Flood Emergency (It’s the first one for NYC).”

FORMER STATE JUDGE PICKED TO LEAD LEGAL AID SOCIETY: Zachary Carter has been appointed as the new chairman of the board of The Legal Aid Society. Carter brings years of public service to this position, most recently serving as Corporation Counsel for the City of New York. He’s also served as United States Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, and as a state judge.

Mr. Carter succeeds Richard Davis who chaired the Legal Aid Society board for 11 years.

BIKETOBER PROMOTES HEALTHY CYCLING: The New York City Department of Transportation is kicking off Biketober, DOT’s annual celebration of biking, with events around all five boroughs. Biketober will feature giveaways of helmets, lights and bells, sponsor bike safety check stations and opportunities for locals to give feedback about cycling in their neighborhoods.

Brooklyn Biketober events will take place on Monday, October 18, 8-11 a.m. at the Pulaski Bridge, Eagle Street and McGuinness Boulevard in Greenpoint; Wednesday, October 20, 2-5 p.m. at Nostrand Playground, Foster and Nostrand avenues in Flatbush; and on Sunday, October 24, 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on, 44th Street and 6th Avenue, Sunset Park.

MEET ARTISTS AT OPEN STUDIOS: New York City-based art non-profit Chashama will hold its annual “Open Studios at Brooklyn Army Terminal,” taking place October 16 and 17, at the BAT, 80 58th Street in Sunset Park. Between 1-5 p.m., participants will be able to interact with talented artists and explore the historic Brooklyn Army Terminal, as well as view demonstrations, buy artworks, and get involved in collaborative workshops.

Chashama partners with property owners to transform unused real estate into artist workspace, presentation space and space for free art classes for under-resourced communities.
